The stars of such hit television series as Dark Oracle, Degrassi and Life with Derek reunite for this ensemble, character-driven feature, filmed on location in the Northern Ontario town of Parry Sound. Written and produced by Paula Brancati (Shaftesbury’s Dark Oracle, Degrassi) and Michael Seater (Shaftesbury’s Life with Derek, Bomb Girls), People Hold On is produced in association with Shaftesbury.
In the vein of The Big Chill and The Breakfast Club, People Hold On is about the intimate exploration of relationships, friends, enemies, love and loss. Set during a weekend at a cottage, a group of childhood friends reunite in their 20s for a lakeside romp as they face the challenges of adulthood for the first time. Not unlike the characters they play in the film, the cast is also made up of old friends. Tapping into that history, Brancati and Seater created a detailed outline and wrote the script based on workshops and rehearsals with the cast prior to filming.
Directed by Seater, People Hold On stars Brancati, Katie Boland (Reign, Shaftesbury’s Long Story, Short), Mazin Elsadig (Degrassi, Stoked), Ashley Leggat (Shaftesbury’s Life with Derek, The Good Witch’s Wonder), Jonathan Malen (House at the End of the Street, Republic of Doyle), Al Mukadam (Spun Out, Radio Free Roscoe), Noah Reid (Shaftesbury’s Backpackers, Titanic), and Chloe Rose (Hellions, Degrassi).
“It’s a joy to have the opportunity to mentor the young creative talent behind this film, many of whom got their start with Shaftesbury, as they grow in their careers as actors, writers, producers and directors,” said Jennings. “They are the future of this industry, and I’m delighted to support them as they make their foray into a new arena.”
“The lines of reality are definitely blurred on this film and the actors really draw from their own relationships with each other to infuse their fictional selves with their true feelings,” said Brancati.
“People Hold On universally explores the unknown, dark abyss that is one’s future and facing the expectations we had for our present selves,” said Seater.
People Hold On is written and produced by Brancati and Seater and directed by Seater, and is Seater’s feature film directorial debut.
